Today’s highlight is a tour of the astonishing Great Wall. Much anticipated by our guests, the Great Wall serves as one of the most famous images of China. It is the only manmade object visible from the moon and one of the Seven Wonders of the World! After lunch, see skilled artisans at work at the Cloisonné Factory. Later, walk the Sacred Path of Ming Tombs. Have an up-close view of the beautiful Bird’s Nest and Water Cube, both of which are national stadiums built for the 2008 Olympics. Fly to Urumqi, the capital city of Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. In the afternoon, visit the Xinjiang Provincial Museum that preserves the region's finest archeological artifacts and art treasures including the "desert mummies", some dating back 4,000 years! Then visit the Red Hill Park. In the evening enjoy Uighur style dinner and a local minority folk show.

Day 7

Urumqi - Kashgar

A scenic drive in the morning to the Heavenly Mountain (Mt. Tian-shan) to have a tour of the Heavenly Lake (Tian chi) situated at an elevation of over 6000 ft. Surrounded by green pastures and pristine conifer forests, you can relax yourself and explore the alpine wilderness, savor the fresh air and then take a Boat Ride on Heavenly Lake and escape into a peaceful, dream-like world. This area is home to the Kazakh people so we’ll tour the verdant Tian-shan Pasture and then visit a Local Kazakh Family at their yurt home. In the evening, fly to Kashgar, the most west point of China and its silk route. You’ll see the Turkestan influence visible on the streets and in the homes here. This place feels, looks and even smells dramatically different from the rest of China.

Kashgar - Urumqi

Explore the most notable sights and attractions in Kashgar and around. First on the list is the Abakh Khoja Tomb, one of the finest examples of Islamic architecture found anywhere in China. Then head to the Idkah Mosque, a 15th century mosque and one of the largest and busiest in China. It’s also the religious centre of Kashgar. The best way to meet the local is to visit the Kashgar Grand Bazaar. Famous throughout Asia, this ancient market attracts locals and merchants from all over Xinjiang and nearby countries such as Pakistan and Kirghizstan. There are wonderful offerings of goods and souvenirs here. Fly back to Urumqi in the evening.

Urumqi - Turpan

Travel by coach to Turpan, a Uighur town set in a large oasis surrounded by desert and dry mountains. Visit the mysterious Gaochang Ruins, which reveals traces of a prosperous ancient trading centre and military stronghold. In the afternoon tour the Flaming Mountains and the Bezeklik Thousand Buddha Caves, another UNESCO World Heritage site.

Day 10

Turpan - Dunhuang

Later visit the Karez Wells – a remarkable underground irrigation system that was first engineered 2,000 years ago, based on a Persian design.
